Pennsylvania State Auto Inspection Practice Test

The minimum requirement for a functional horn is that it must be audible at least 200 feet away. This standard ensures that the horn can effectively alert other drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists of a vehicle's presence or any potential danger, thereby promoting road safety. The 200-foot distance is set to ensure that the horn can be heard in various traffic and environmental conditions, allowing for timely responses from others on the road.

In contrast, while being audible at shorter distances may seem reasonable, the required distance is specifically defined to provide a buffer for safety in a busy urban environment. The installation of a horn on all vehicles is a general requirement, but without the specific performance standard regarding its audibility, its effectiveness in emergencies could be diminished. A continuous tone, while it might be a characteristic of some horns, is not a requirement for functionality; a horn that meets the audibility standard can vary in sound type.
